Some would say that to be the sole Brit among eight Aussies was persecution beyond normally acceptable limits, but the Ace in the pack, our guide Pen alleviated this and provided a huge wealth and depth of knowledge to contribute hugely to what was always going to be a powerful experience. I attended both the Famous Walk and Sachsenhausen tours with Derek as guide and the two afternoons couldn't have been much better spent. I am not big on organized tours but I've always believed that knowing the history of a place is necessary for a genuine understanding and appreciation of it, otherwise the place is reduced to tourist spots. Derek's comprehensive knowledge of modern European history and his passion for both what he does and why he does it helped reveal this wonderful city as a complex network of human actions and decisions, even accidents, with widespread repercussions. Derek's tour revealed the city as something we take for granted--as alive.

I have just returned to the US from an extended visit to Europe and wanted to email some brief remarks on your tour which was the highpoint of my trip. The purpose of any tour should be to inform participants, no mean feat with a dvierse group of tourists and a wide ranging subject such as the Cold War and the central role played by the Berlin Wall. By way of background I have been to Berlin many times in the past both during the time of the Wall and just after its fall in 1990 . I learned a great deal from you especially as you expressed clearly and passionately not only the historical facts as to how the wall came into being, but also from your unique perspective of somebody who had actually lived in the East and experienced the system first hand. Your style of asking questions of the group not only kept their attention but compelled them to think about the issues, resulting in a lasting impression of the subject matter. We recently went on the Third Reich Tour through Berlin with Derek as our tour guide. We loved the Berlin Insider Tour so much the day before that we really wanted to find out more specific info on WWII on the Third Reich Tour. This is my first time to Berlin and I had the pleasure of being on a walking tour with Pen. She was very informative and made everthing so interesting... I am not much into history. : ) and I was a little worried when I was told it was going to be 3-4 hours long (my friend booked the tour for me), but the time went by so quickly.
